Pretty Good Sounds

We’re Michael Carver and Bethan Maddison, the faces behind Pretty Good Sounds.

Our audio journey as a team started in the lounge room of a share house, and in 2017, with help from our friends, our dads and a couple of YouTube tutorials, we built “Pretty Good Studio” at The Mill in Adelaide.

We’ve had a hands-on approach to the space from the beginning - building our own walls, painting, designing acoustic treatment, soldering, and running never-ending cables. Over the years, our studio has evolved in ways that allow us to work more consistently, but that DIY mindset still shapes how we approach our work today.

We know what it means to be independent artists, and we take that seriously in the way we tackle every project. Professional development is at the heart of what we do, and we only improve with every bit of work we take on.

Who Are We?

I have always enjoyed and appreciated all kinds of music, from Frank Sinatra to Spongebob’s Greatest Hits, to Slipknot, to iconic video game soundtracks.

I typically find myself working in the realm of indie/pop/folk/punk artists, however I love being a part of any project that feels as though it really matters to the people making it. My favourite thing about work is when someone walks into the studio as a client, and leaves as a friend.

I do a combination of mixing, mastering, recording, and production work, whilst also making music myself in my spare time, and playing in bands on the side.

I’ve worked in lots of different areas of the music industry over the years, and it means a lot to have a space like Pretty Good Studio - I hope you love it too.

Bethan Maddison

My name is Michael, and I love to mix and master music.

I work across a wide range of genres, and there’s something to appreciate in almost all of them.

When I’m listening to music for fun, it’s usually some version of indie-pop music (Chvrches, Medium Build, Clairo) or alternative rock/emo/what’s a genre anyway? (The Wonder Years, MoBo, The Front Bottoms, The Cardboard Swords). I grew up listening to a mix of ’70s folk, rock and country thanks to my dad, ‘80s pop music when mum was driving, as well as the ’90s - 2000s pop music that was on the radio at the time.

Regardless of genre, the songs I enjoy working on most are the ones where everyone involved is great at what they do - when the songwriting, the performance, the production, and the mix all push each other forward. I really love when the result becomes something none of us could’ve made on our own.

We’ve been lucky to work on a lot of great music over the past 10 years - more than we could ever fit on one page; so we’ve pulled together a few releases that stand out. Some we’re especially proud of, some taught us a lot, and some are just special to us because we got to make them with people that we love. It’s a mix of styles, genres, and sounds that we are so proud to have been a part of.
